Description

  • Wichita State University football players signing autographs on Douglas Avenue during a Meet the Shockers event on Saturday 11 September 1965. George Karras was head football coach from 1965 to 1966, compiling a record of 4–15. Jim Waskiewicz played center-linebacker on this WSU team, before going on to play for the AFL's New York Jets in 1966. The Shockers had practiced for two and a half hours that morning, with wind sprints and offense versus defense drills, before taking a shuttle to downtown. Greater Downtown Wichita, Inc., sponsored the event in the 200 Block of East Douglas. Also shows businesses from the 300 Block: Savmor Drugs, Palace Theater, Gateway Sporting Goods, Cinderella, Montgomery Wards, Eaton Hotel, Askins Credit Clothing and the Wichita Theater.
