Description
- Samuel H. Hoover was born 17 January 1845 in Hamilton County, Virginia. He moved with family at age thirteen to Bloomington, Illinois. A private in the Co. F, 94th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Samuel served during the Civil War before mustering out on 17 July 1865 as a corporal at Galveston, Texas. He married Eliza Teter in 1867 in Bloomington, Illinois. Eliza died in 1872 and married Ambrosina German Shannon by 1880. Ambrosina was born abt. 1857 in Illinois.
- Samuel came to Wichita in 1869 and purchased a farm, after moving to purchased 291 acres between the Little and Big Arkansas river. He sold the property in 1884 before purchasing 160 acres west of the city where he grew one of the finest orchards, Hoover Orchards, of the Arkansas valley. In 1898 he transferred management to his son but remained in an advisory capacity until 1910.
- Samuel died 4 December 1913 in Wichita. He is buried in the Highland Cemetery in Wichita. Five children are known to born to Samuel.
