Description

  • Albert Alexander Hyde, a well-known philanthropist, was born 2 March 1848 in Lee, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. He came to Wichita in 1872 where he started work for Wichita Savings Bank. He married Ida Elizabeth Todd on 19 January 1875. Ida was born abt. 1855.
  • In 1879, he became cashier of the Farmers & Merchant Bank, later becoming Kansas National Bank. Deciding to venture out on his own he started a soap business, abt. 1882, before putting his energy into the manufacturing of mentholatum and by 1890 this business was growing steadily. He started the Mentholatum Company in Wichita before branching into factories in New York, Slough, England, Fort Epie, Canada and Japan.
  • His work in philanthropy started early and was known to given to many organizations across the world. Y.M.C.A. was greatest interest. He helped build the Estes Park camp, Wood camp, and many other centers. He gave generously to colleges as well. Hyde Park, in Wichita, was named in honor of Albert for all his contributions to the city.
  • Albert died on 10 January 1935 of a heart attack. Ida died in February 1933. Both are buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Wichita. Nine children are known to born to this union.
