Description
- Bessie May Israel was born 7 June 1901 in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas, the daughter of Ruben C. and Julia Israel. She graduated from Wichita High School in 1919 and attended Fairmount College.
- She was the “female swimming champ” in Wichita in 1916 and continued to swim until she was around 77 years of age. Bessie was the adventurous type and traveled the extensively before marrying Ray G. Warren on 21 January 1926. Ray was born 25 August 1903.
- After marriage, Bessie assisted her husband in the Ray G. Warren Riverside market. Bessie maintained the Riverside boathouse for many years after her father, Ruben built it in 1900. After her husband’s death in 1970, Bessie began working as a volunteer at St. Mary’s elementary school.
- Bessie died on 11 October 1985 in Wichita. Ray died on 22 August 1970. They are both buried in the El Paso Cemetery in Derby, Sedgwick County, Kansas. Three children are known to born to this union.
