Description

  • Hannah Rae Woodman was born 10 February 1870 in Jacksonville, Illinois. She came to Wichita in a covered wagon with her family in the 1870’s, her father establishing the First Arkansas Valley Bank in Wichita. Hannah was kidnaped by the Arapaho Indians when she was three years old. William “Buffalo Bill” Mathewson and her father formed a posse and was able to trade for her return.
  • Hannah was a writer of books, plays, poems and essay and a lecturer and educator. She attended Garfield University, now Friends University. She received her bachelor's degree from Drake University in 1891, master of arts degree from University of Kansas in 1920, and later graduate work from University of Nebraska and University of Minnesota. Hannah taught English at Garfield University and Fairmount College, now Wichita University.
  • Hannah died on 11 May 1951 in Wichita.
