Description
- Elsie Nuzman was born 27 September 1869 in Circleville, Jackson County, Kansas. Elsie graduated from Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas. She married Henry Justin Allen, the city editor of the Salina Republican newspaper on 27 October 1892 in Circleville, Kansas. Henry was born 12 Septeber 1868 in Pittsfield, Warren County, Pennsylvania.
- Elsie worked with Frank Lloyd Wright on designing their home in Wichita from 1916-1918. It was the only Frank Lloyd Wright home built in Kansas at that time. Elsie became the First Lady of Kansas between 1919-1923 when Henry was in office as Kansas Governor and US Senator. She had a passion for the arts and was instrumental in starting the Wichita Arts Association.
- Elsie died on 29 December 1951 in Wichita. She was buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery next to her husband who died on 17 January 1950. Four children are known to born to this union.
