Description

  • Alfred Edward Howse was born 8 June 1908 in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. Alfred graduated from Wichita High in 1925 and attended Chicago University before returning to become the president of the Howse companies. He married Kathryn Petrie in 1928. Kathryn was born abt.1908 in Kansas.
  • Alfred was the district traffic manager for National Air Transport in 1927. Alfred was the mayor of Wichita in 1956-1957 and replaced H.D. Lester in 1957-1959. He chaired the Kansas State Crime Commission. After his bout as mayor, Alfred returned to the furniture business. He led the effort to build Cheney Reservoir, ensuring Wichita a long-term water supply.
  • The ex-mayor did much for the entire nation, the state of Kansas, and for the Wichita State University. He served in the Army Air Corps, and after the war, with the Office of War Mobilization and Reconversion and with the Surplus Property Board. He served on several state advisory board and helped establish the Kansas Highway Patrol. He donated his vast collection of papers on the water problem and over 2000 works of art to Wichita State University.
  • Alfred died 9 November 1986 after being shot in his sleep by his wife before killing herself. Both are buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Wichita.
